About
Chiminyo is a drummer and producer from North London who explores the space between electronic music and jazz. Principally renowned for his solo project in which he combines the raw, immediate live sound of percussion and the futuristic timbres of his electronic productions to create his own, daring soundworld. Via laboriously self-coded software, each cymbal crash and drum hit triggers a synth or sample, allowing Chiminyo complete control and freeing him of all loops, click-tracks and backing tracks. As well as his solo project, Chiminyo leads his synth led ensemble, Uniri, and releases live improvised electronic-jazz performances of his NRG nights. He has also collaborated and recorded with Gary Bartz, Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Theon Cross, and Zara McFarlane. The drummer, who through his craft uses a range of technological equipment, is also sponsored by Roland and Bosphorus, as well as being an Ableton artist. Critically-acclaimed by the likes of Gilles Peterson, BBC 1Xtra and Jazz FM, he's received the Jazz FM Digital Award whilst the track ‘Kandy Lanx’ was nominated for a 2020 Worldwide FM Award.
Precipice is Chiminyo's offering to the beat tape cannon. Weaving his diverse influences of Hip-hop, jazz and synthwave into a beat-laden record whilst stepping away from the live performance of his drum kit trigger technology and into the studio has given him the opportunity to further explore his signature soundworld of psychedelic sound-design and phat analogue synth work. Whilst tracks like Cloud Mine and Night Before Christmas are a nod towards Chiminyo's influence of the heavy synth and bass driven hip-hop of The LA Beat Scene, songs like UP and Oceans showcase his use of dreamy vocals and an albility to write catchy melodies over infections beats.
